This
is a linoleum carving tool. If you don't have
one of these than a rotary tool with a carving bit
will work. You can also use a wood carving
tool or a wood gouging tool.
You will use this to cut away spaces in the
back of the gourd pieces in order to have a final
piece that has no bumps from the arms, legs, and
hair.
|
|
|
Use
the linoleum cutter and make grooves in the back
of your gourd pieces where you will place the arms,
legs, neck and hair. Don't forget to put grooves
in both the head and body for the neck to be attached
When using this tool, always
cut away from your body. And make sure your
fingers are not in front of the tool at any time.
I start from the inside area and end at the
edge of the piece of gourd.

|
|
This
is Fabri-Tac glue (I just love this stuff) and an
assortment of pipe cleaners.
The pipe cleaners will be used
to make the hair, arms, and legs.
The Fabri-Tac is what will
be used to attach the pipe cleaners to the gourd.
|
|
|
I
use some nail clippers to cut my pipe cleaners.
They work better than wire cutters do for
thin wire.
Cut many lengths of different colors and see
which ones will look best with your doll's outfit.
On this doll I will use blue and orange.
|
|
|
Here
I have taken a pipe cleaner that will be used for
the hair and wound it around a skewer or small dowel.
This will form the curls in
your doll's hair.
|
|
|
When
you think of being able to wear this as a pin you
want to take extra precautions to keep your clothes
from getting snagged from the cut end of the wire
on the pipe cleaners.
Take a pair of pliers and make
a small loop in the end of the pipe cleaner. Do
this on the end that does not touch the gourd.
|
|
|
Now
with the loop inside the jaws of the pliers...squeeze.
Now you have a soft, and safe
embellishment that won't snag or poke your clothes.
|
|
|
Put
some Fabri-Tac in the grooves you cut in the back
of your piece and place your pipe cleaners in the
grooves and clamp them down with some clothes pins
or other small clamps.
Remember to only
do a couple at a time or you won't have enough space
for all the clamps to fit.
|
|
|
This
is what the front of your doll should look
like when all the arms, legs, hair, and neck have
been glued in place.
I decided to wrap the orange
pipe cleaners with blue yarn because I didn't like
the way it looked with just the orange.
