"The Duck"

 This
is a duck that was made for a friend. It is
made out of vitreous glass tiles. The pool
that this duck resides in was first drained of its
water then a two inch thickness of the bottom of
the pool was removed with a dremmel tool and a grinder.
The
next
step was to pour a self leveling foundation for
the mosaic to sit on. The mosaic itself was
pre-made at a comfortable spot at my kitchen table
then it was layed into a bed of grout which sits
on top of the foundation.
The
mosaic is cleaned multiple times with a clean sponge.
This helps to remove as much of the grout
as possible before it is completely dry.
After
the mosaic dried it was ground with a dremmel tool
to remove any existing bits of grout that have been
left on the surface that the sponge could not remove.
The corners of the glass must also be ground
and any area that may be raised even a little above
the surface of the pool's floor.
The
next step is to seal the mosaic with a sealer that
is made to withstand being under water and it must
be able to withstand freezing and thawing.
After
letting the mosaic underlayment and grout completely
cure for a week,.the last step is to give this duck
a final buffing with a dry rag and then fill up
the pool with water.
This
makes for a beautiful and SAFE duck to walk on or
swim above.
 "The
Duck measures about 4.5 feet high and 2.5 feet wide.
It took approximately 100 hours of labor from
start to finish (That does not include curing time
of course. Does not include research time).
This is "The Duck"
from a different perspective. A friend is
looking down into the pool while taking a picture
(that's his shadow that you see in the lower left
hand
corner of the picture.).

"My Pet Dragon"
|

|
 This
is a piece of art that was created with small pebbles
(pea gravel) and rice. The dragon was formed
after the pebbles were all painted. It has
been set onto a plywood backing board.

"Aquarium"
|

|
 This
is another mosaic made from small pebbles (pea gravel).
The pebbles were painted first then they were
applied to a drawing on a sheet of plywood.
There
are actually two fish in the aquarium, one is blue
and small, the other is more of a copper color and
the blue fish is looking at it.
This took about 40 hours to
complete.
